On June 15, 2001, John and Patsy Ramsey on behalf of their son, Burke Ramsey filed lawsuit against Court TV network for $70 million over a broadcast and news release that they claim named their 14-year-old son as a suspect in the killing months after authorities had cleared him of any involvement.

The complaint, filed in U.S. District Court in Atlanta, seeks compensatory and punitive damages on grounds of libel and defamation. The complaint said a Court TV program of November 5, 1999 and the October 27, 1999 news release promoting it mentioned Burke Ramsey as a suspect is still accessible on the Internet

The complaint claims damage to Burke's reputation and subjected him to public contempt and ridicule and lists as defendants AOL Time Warner Inc. , Time Warner Entertainment Co., Liberty Media Corp. and Courtroom Television Network LLC, which operate Court TV.
