This timely special looks at the controversy swirling around 53-year-old police officer Drew Peterson, whose wife, Stacy, 23, mysteriously disappeared in October 2007. Suspicions that Drew murdered Stacy arose when his second wife accused him of abuse and when the body of his third wife was exhumed and showed evidence of physical violence. Then, Drew's stepbrother came forward and claimed to have helped Drew carry a large plastic container from Drew's house that he now fears may have contained Stacy's remains. Now, family members say that Drew was a controlling husband and Stacy feared for her life. Is Drew Peterson innocent, as he claims -- or a serial killer hiding behind a badge?

Summary of A&E Special: "Who Is Drew Peterson?"

Comments by various people about DP:

-charming, always joking around.

-proud to be a police officer.

-he threatened to kill his wife.

When SP went missing, it made absolutely no sense to her family and friends. They believe she would never leave her kids behind. Searches for SP began almost immediately and the only member of her family not involved was DP. DP said SP ran off with another man, so there was no reason to look for her.

Clint Van Zant (former FBI profiler-CVZ) said, "even Scott Peterson participated in the searches for his missing wife Laci."

DP said that SP's family and friends never cared for him because of the age difference--when they met he was 47 and she was 17 and he was still married to his third wife. DP was well-known in the community, had been a police officer for many years, and was considered a "powerful man." He was a "big fish in a little pond."

DP began tracking, following, and controlling his young wife, but he says the reason was her behavior. "She would snap on you."

Three days before she went missing SP told a friend that she couldn't take it anymore, she didn't feel safe in her own home, and she had to get out.

On 10/28/07 at 10am SP talked with a friend on the phone and discussed plans to paint. DP said he thought SP was going to spend the day with her grandfather. But then thought about it later and realized she usually took the kids with her when she went to her grandfather's.

ISP is clearly focusing on DP as a suspect and DP's response to that is that "the husband is always the suspect. They just made it official." DP's curious behavior on television is to dance and flirt with the media. DP says "my attorney says I can't do that, but it's just me being comical." DP complains that the media trucks run their transformers from 3:45am to around 11:00pm every day and it's just disrupting.

TH comments on DP's grandiose assessment of self and shows no concern at all for his missing wife. "His outrageous behavior is always calculated and done to manipulate."

ISP is investigating cell phone records, emails, computer records, etc. DP called in sick to work on 10/28/07.

Shortly after SP went missing questions arose about the mysterious death of his third wife Kathleen Savio. KS was found dead on 3/1/2004 and as soon as her sister heard about her death, asked if DP killed her. DP answered KS's sister, after a long pause, with a smirk and the words, "I wouldn't kill the mother of my children."

TH: DP always has that smirk, that smile that seems to say, "I know and you don't know and you'll never know."

After SP went missing, people started wondering about DP. While family and friends were conducting searches, he was making media appearances and posing for People magazine. DP said, "after Stacy left, I wondered whose fault it was that she left--her's or mine? Could I have been a better husband?"

There is a history of domestic violence, control, and manipulation in most of DP's relationships with women. Kyle Piry dated DP in the early 80's. She worked at a gas station and one night someone drove off and didn't pay for gas so she called the police. The officer who arrived to take the report was DP. KP was 20 and DP was 27. KP found DP to be very self-assured and they began dating-- the usual, such as parties with his cop friends, dinner, movies, shows, etc. Within four months they were engaged. Soon KP had a bad feeling. DP began interrogating her, stalking her, and making disparaging remarks to her. She broke off the engagement and when she went to retrieve her belongings, there was a physical confrontation and verbal abuse, but she did not press charges. DP continued to keep tabs on her for many months. Each time he would stop her and cite her for minor violations such as bald tires, he had a smirky smile on his face and it was obvious that he got pleasure out of it. They broke up in 1982.

Later that same year DP married his second wife Vicky. Years later he would divorce Vicky and sweep Kathleen Savio off her feet by buying her gifts and being very friendly with her family. KS's sister Sue Doman said there were warning signs. At first DP was always joking and very friendly. He always showed an interest in KS's family members and was always offering to help them. There were public displays of affection between DP and KS. Then married in 1992 and had two sons. After the children were born he became controlling, began calling KS horrible swearing names, commenting that he thought she was too fat. This progressed into spying on her, tapping the phones, and following her to the point that he knew every move she made. Eventually KS had to be taken to the ER to deal with the injuries she endured at DP's hands. KS wanted her marriage to work and to have a family, but it was already too late because DP had already moved on to Stacy Cales.

Summary of A&E Special: "Who Is Drew Peterson?" Part 2

In August 2001 DP, KS, and Stacy Cales entered a fateful love triangle. KS was stressed and unhappy all the time. DP seemed to be content with SP. SP had come from a troubled childhood and DP bought her a car and furnished her apartment. SP's family was alarmed because of the age difference and the fact that DP was still married. DP was flattered that a beautiful young woman was interested in him. He said that the stresses of running the businesses he shared with KS put a strain on their marriage. By the time DP began dating SP, he and KS were living separate lives and he had made an apartment in the basement of they marital home and came in at all hours of the day and night. KS received an anonymous letter telling her that her husband was having an affair with a minor and that she was the joke of DP's police department. When KS confronted DP with the letter he chased her around the house with a stick trying to get the letter from her, but she would not give it to him. KS's sister called and she could hear DP yelling in the background and tellling KS to hang up on her sister. KS told her sister she was leaving to go get a restraining order against DP. KS eventually got that restraining order and KS took out a $1million life insurance policy and named her children as the beneficiaries. Not much later DP bought a house 20 doors away and moved SP in. SP and DP harassed KS by pulling into the driveway and honking the horn and all kinds of things.

Steve Carcerano once again told the story of KS running out of the house and punching SP while she filmed the whole event with the video camera, DP subdued KS and called the police, and KS was handed over to DP's fellow officers. 17 calls were made to the police between 2002 and 2003. KS was the only one who got charged in these incidents and the charges were eventually dropped. DP was clever enough never to be charged. Sue Doman said, "police are supposed to serve and protect, but not Drew Peterson." DP was able to convince everyone he knew that KS was crazy.

ON 7/5/02 there was an incident involving DP being in KS's house in a swat outfit where DP attacked KS and confronted her on the stairs. DP's version of the story was that KS invited him to the house and they had a calm conversation and she tried to kiss him. No action was taken following that incident. KS became very frustrated with the way things were going with DP and wrote to the State's Attorney about what DP was doing. By the time the divorce was final, KS was sad to be losing her husband, but glad she would be free to live her own life.

By 2/2004 the couple had settled their finances and visitation arrangments. On the weekend of February 28, 29, and 30, DP could not reach KS. On March 1, 2004 he was circling the block and saw Steve Carcerano in his car and asked him to meet him at KS's house in 15 minutes. KS was found dead in her bathtub and her body was bluish purple according to SC and there was blood in the bottom of the bathtub. DP felt KS for a pulse and there were no vital life signs "as we say." DP said he called the police and said "someone else needs to be here."

KS's sister Sue Doman got a call telling her that KS was dead--the call that she had been dreading for so long--and immediately said "did he (DP) kill her?" Sue said she could not breath and kept walking around her house after she heard saying "I know he killed her." Before her death, Sue kept reassuring KS that she would be fine and would make it." KS kept responding, "I don't think so, I don't think so." KS's death was immediately declared an accidental drowning and when the coroner's jury met they decided it was an accidental drowning as well. One of the coroner's jurors said the vote was split down the middle when one of the jurors who was a police officer said that DP was a good man and was not capable of hurting his wife. The juror believes this swayed the jury to rule KS's death an accident.

CVZ said, "When a police officer is involved, the investigation needs to be above reproach."

DP commented that he was sure the Savio family were searching for answers, but he didn't know anything more than the official investigation.

SP was a 19-year-old bubbly, warm, caring mother. She had her son Anthony and daughter Laci as well as DP's two middle sons to care for. DP claims that after SP's sister died of cancer she changed. SP's family disagrees and says that it started before that. The believe the age difference began gnawing away at Dp and he started making demeaning remarks about SP's weight and appearance, which prompted her to get the "repairs" done that DP talked about. DP made the comment that SP "loved male attention." But SP's family said DP watched SP's every move, documented her phone calls, circled the parking lot whenever she went to a restaurant with one of her sisters, and while working he would swing by their home constantly. Their neighbor Sharon said he would go to work, hold roll call, and come home, go out for an hour, come home and eat dinner, go out for an hour and come back, etc. SP's family said there have been several incidents of physical violence where DP threw SP down the stairs, knocked her into the television, and threw her across the room.

DP said he only remembers one incident when he cornered SP in the kitchen and she told him to get out of her face and she hit him in the head with a frozen steak.

SP's family were concerned for SP and urged her to leave DP, but she was deathly afraid that if she left with the kids he would come after her. Three weeks prior to her disappearance SP contacted Scott Rosetto and renewed her friendship with him. Scott said he got the impression she was sick and tired of being stuck in her home all the time and wanted to be free to live her life. They exchanged some flirty, racy emails and text messages that he said were innocent. SP came to Denny's to meet SR and some of his friends and DP showed up and confronted SP and SR.

Summary of A&E Special: "Who Is Drew Peterson?" Part 3

On 10/17/07 Steve Cesare received an email from SP because DP limited her telephone calls. He realized SP sounded like she needed help, but wasn't sure what he could do since her husband was a police sargeant. DP's response to the email SP sent to Cesare was that the email does not sound like something she would say or her vocabulary. On the same day, she left a voicemail message for her father telling him she loved him and giving him her new phone number.

On 10/25/07 SP called Pam Bosco asking for advice about leaving her husband and PB told her she needed a lawyer so that she would not lose custody of her kids. The day before SP went missing, SP leaned over and kissed her sister Cassandra and said, "I love you. If I disappear, it is no accident."

PB said she wishes now she had given SP different advice. She said, "I wish I had advised her differently. I wish I had told her to just pack up and get out of there."

On 10/28/07 Cassandra Cales tried to call SP all afternoon, but SP's phone was off. At 11:30pm she finally called DP and he sounded out of breath and told her that SP had gone off to the Bahamas with someone else taking a bikini, her passport, and a lot of money. Searches were initiated almost immediately, but DP did not participate. Steve Cesare said "Stacy had no where to go, no where to hide, and she would not leave her kids."

On 10/30/07, within two days of SP's disappearance Thomas Morphey's story was told to ISP. Tom told his friend Walter that he helped DP move a sealed container that was warm and weighed about 120 pounds. He insisted it was SP in the container. When the 4:30 news came on and Walter saw the story about SP's disappearance, he tried to call Tom, but his girlfriend answered the phone and said that Tom attempted suicide the night before.

So far no charges have been filed against DP.

TH: "DP may not have committed the perfect crime, but he's certainly got a headstart."

TH: "I absolutley believe there will be an arrest, but for KS's death, not SP's disappearance."

KS was exhumed within 12 days of SP's disappearance. Following the second autopsy, the results of which have not been released yet, a pathologist was hired by the family and that pathologist did another autopsy and determined that KS's death was a homocide. CVZ said KS was a victim of multiple contusions and abrasions, as well as a cut on her head.

Sue Doman said she prays for KS every night and asks her to help them find the truth.

DP said regarding KS: "If they go deeper and discover something, it has nothing to do with me."

TH: Everyone really wants this guy and the public doesn't like him but somewhere in the back of my head I keep asking "where's the evidence?"
