14 SH: Uh-hum (affirmative)
15 SP: It was Father's Day.
16 SH: It was Father's Day?
17 SP: Father's Day
18 SH: What makes you so sure it was Father's Day?
19 SP: Because it's on there. It's on my letter.
20 SH: It's on your letter?

1 SP: ...those letters because I don't do anything fancy with a computer. I can't even
2 get this news that you're supposed to be able to get.
3 SH: Uh-hum (affirmative)
4 SP: You know they say W-W-W, dot, com...
5 SH: Right.
6 SP: ...WESH, or whatever. Nothing comes up for me.
7 SH: Okay.
8 SP: So I'm not a good one that. But I have that letter at home if you want it.
9 KK: Okay.
10 SP: But Cindy said you might you know, want to see it or something. Whatever you
11 want to say. I don't know what I can say because I don't know anything else.
12 SH: Well, that's fine.
13 KK: Okay, that's no problem
14 SH: My name, my name's Susan
15 SP: Nice to meet you.
16 SH: Okay? And this is Kevin.
17 KK: Hi there.
18 SP: (inaudible)
19 SH: And we're both with, Detectives with the Sheriff's Office. And your name is?
20 SP: Shirley.
21 SH: Shirley? And your last name?
22 SP: They're not...
23 SH: I...
24 SP: ...going to come here and bother...
25 SH: No.

2

Plesea, Shirley/Case #08-069208/GG

1 KK: No,no.
2 SH: No, not at all. That's why we're here quietly in a quiet room.
3 SP: Okay.
4 SH: Uh...
5 SP: Plesea.
6 SH: Plesea. Okay. How do...
7 KK: How do you spell that?
8 SP: P_L_E_S_E_A
9 SH: Okay, Because I wasn't sure how to pronounce it and I didn't want to be
10 discourteous.
11 SP: Oh, that's alright.
12 SH: Okay.
13 SP: We've got everything.
14 SH: Uh.
15 SP: I'm, and only been married for sixty-two years so.
16 KK: (Chuckles)
17 SH: Wow, okay.
18 KK: Man.
19 SH: Uhm, that's kind of what we wanted to do is try and figure out when the last time
20 that Caylee was here. And you're positive it's Father's Day?
21 SP: On the 15th, uh, Father's Day, yeah (affirmative)
22 SH: Okay.
23 SP: (Inaudible) Because in the letter I said to her, to Mary Lou, I said, "Cindy
24 brought a nice card. I told her not to buy any presents for Dad because it cost so

1 much for gas." And I says, "Caylee ran right up to Grandpa so he could hold
2 her." She wasn't afraid of him. And she hadn't seen him for a while.
3 KK: Uh-hum (affirmative)
4 SP: And he held her on his lap. That's all...
5 SH: Okay.
6 SP: ...I know.
7 SH: And you were...
8 SP: And I couldn't...
9 SH: ...for that?
10 SP: ...remember.
11 SH: Okay.
12 SP: I thought it was the 8th myself...
13 SH: Uh-hum (affirmative).
14 SP: ...but it wasn't.
15 SH: Okay. And you were here that day? Were you here when they were here?
16 SP: I wasn't here when they were here, but I uhm, had chili and they'd come over to
17 my house afterwards and we had chili. I even mentioned that in the letter.
18 SH: Okay. So, Cayla, Caylee and her grandmother then came to your house?
19 SP: Yeah (affirmative)
20 SH: Okay. And that was Father's Day?
21 SP: Father's Day.
22 SH: Okay.
23 SP: I would have swore, which I did I guess, uh, not to anybody person, but uh, that it
24 was the 8th, but it was Father's Day.
25 SH: Uh-hum (affirmative).

4

Plesea, Shirley/Case #08-069208/GG

1 KK: Okay.
2 SP: And that was the 15th. She should be on the book.
3 SH: As signing in here?
4 KK: Uh-hum (affirmative)
5 SH: Okay.
6 SP: Uh-hum (affirmative).
7 SH: Okay
8 KK: Now, Caylee's mom, did she ever come to visit her grandfather?
9 SP: Oh, yeah (affirmative). But I don't know when was the last time. But see, I had
10 a, another grandson that come down to visit me from Ohio. I hadn't seen him for
11 a lot of years.
12 KK: Uh-hum (affirmative)
13 SP: But he'd come down so he could see Grandpa and me. And it just so happened
14 that day that George and Cindy and Lee and Casey were all here.
15 And those kids hadn't seen each other for years.
16 KK: Do you remember when that might have been? Was it this year?
17 SP: I can look it up on my, oh, it was this year, somewhere, I don't know, somewhere
18 April or May. But Casey used to come pretty often with Cindy and Caylee.
19 Lately she hadn't come as much. Not that there was an estrangement between
20 her and Grandpa or anything, but she just, I don't know.
21 KK: Oh, kids get tied up in doing different things.
22 SP: She's a girl right now that...
23 SH: (unintelligible)
24 SP: ...I don't know.
25 SH: Right.

5

Plesea, Shirley/Case #08-069208/GG

1 SP: I love her still but I'm sort of apprehensive.
2 KK: Understandable. Do you remember the last time that you think you seen her
3 here? I mean we, she wasn't here on Father's Day was she?
4 SP: No, no, Casey wasn't. No, I'm sure the books would say because they all sign
5 their names in. But I can....
6 KK: (unintelligible)
7 SP: ...I can go through and see when my grandson was here and I know that would
8 be one of the...
9 KK: I mean to your recollection of Father's Day, I mean if, if she would have come in
10 later and just didn't sign the book, she wasn't here at all? Is that what you're
11 saying?
12 SP: Oh, Casey wasn't here, yeah (affirmative), no. So it must have been the next
13 day then that she disappeared. That would make a whole week in our favor.
14 SH: Uh-hum (affirmative), yes.
15 KK: Is there anything you noticed with uhm, Caylee that day? Did you notice any, uh,
16 weird bruises or?
17 SP: Oh, my God, no.
18 KK: Did she have an injury, injury or anything?
19 SH: Did, did you see Caylee at, you saw Caylee at your house?
20 SP: Yeah (affirmative)
21 SH: And she was playing and normal?
22 SP: Oh, yeah (affirmative), she was playing with the cat. She ate chili and...
23 KK: (Chuckles)
24
25

6

Plesea, Shirley/Case #08-069208/GG

1 SP: I didn't think she'd like chili so we ended up making her a peanut butter and jelly
2 sandwich, but she'd eaten popcorn over here. I even mentioned that in my letter.
3 They served popcorn that day.
4 KK: Uh-hum (affirmative).
5 SH: Uh-hum (affirmative).
6 SP: And she was eating popcorn. So she didn't have a big appetite evidently. But as
7 far as when I ever seen her, the only time she'd ever have bruises is if she fell,
8 you know....
9 SH: Uh-hum (affirmative).
10 SP: ...normal.
11 KK: Uh-hum (affirmative).
12 SP: She never had any smacking bruises, pinching bruises, anything like that, never.
13 And as far as I know outside of this incident now, poor judgment, whatever it
14 was, she was a, as perfect as a little mother could be.
15 KK: Uh-hum (affirmative)
16 SP: Honest to God. But like I say, you don't know whether it's judgment, what
17 snapped. They said there's no evidence of any drugs or anything. I'm sure the
18 police department of the Sheriff's Department, or whoever's in charge, take any
19 kind of tests, you know, but.
20 KK: Is there anything you can think of that maybe you daughter had said to you,
21 Cindy, uhm, that she was having problems with her daughter, or?
22 SP: Well, the only problem I know that she's been having lately is while Casey was
23 gone she kept in touch with Cindy every day. Almost every day. And Cindy kept
24 saying, "Let me talk to Caylee." And she always had an excuse of some kind.
25

7

Plesea, Shirley/Case #08-069208/GG

1 That's what Cindy told me and I believe it. An see, I'm eighty-one and I'm a
2 little bit right now. uhm, what were we talking about?
3 KK: Just if Cindy....
4 SP: Oh, if...
5 KK: If you ever...
6 SP: ...they had a problem?
7 KK: Yeah (affirmative), if you recall Cindy say anything like that, that Caylee had, or
8 Casey uhm, was having any issues, or that she was worried about her, or ....
9 SP: Uh, she's been worried about her but she never discussed it with me. And she
10 gets upset every time I asked her, you know, too personal.
11 SH: Uh-hum (affirmative)
12 SP: So I was worried about Cindy because she was worried so much about them.
13 Well she took a week's vacation. She didn't go anywhere. She was suppose to
14 go down and see her mother-in-law and spend a couple of days down there and go
15 to the beach and stuff. She ended up staying home because every day Casey
16 would say her and Caylee were coming the next day. And then there was a
17 week or two went by, a week or so went by and she took another week off and
18 she was hoping then. She never went anywhere that week. That's when she
19 was working in her yard all that time, Cindy.
20 KK: Okay.
21 SH: Do you know what...
22 SP: I don't know.
23 SH: Do you know when that was? Was it, that was after Father's Day that she was,
24 took this vacation...
25 SP: Yeah(affirmative).

8

Plesea, Shirley/Case #08-069208/GG

1 SH: ..or was it recently?
2 SP: It was between the time that she's supposed to be with Casey, and Casey's
3 supposed to be with friends, or whatever it was she was going to be going. And
4 how she could fool all of us that she was working here and there, so she
5 probably had a lot of little, little jobs.
6 SH: Uh-hum (affirmative).
7 SP: And she's a very talented photographer. She could have made a good living like
8 that.
9 KK: Do you remember the last time that you spoke with Casey?
10 SP: Uhm, not the date or anything.
11 KK: I mean was it...
12 SH: Okay.
13 KK: ...a little while ago?
14 SP: Yeah (affirmative)
15 SH: Has it been since...
16 SP: It was before Father's Day I know that.
17 KK: Okay.
18 SH: Okay.
19 SP: Before any of this went on. Uh.
20 SH: How were Casey, or how was Cindy and Caylee interacting that day? Everything
21 was fine between those two?
22 SP: Oh, my God, yeah (affirmative).
23 SH: Okay.
24 SP: I mean that ...
25 SH: She minds....

9

Plesea, Shirley/Case #08-069208/GG

1 SP:...child is...
2 SH: She minds her Grandma and has no problems?
3 SP: Oh yeah (affirmative), uh-hum (affirmative). And a, and like any little child, if you
4 got all the adults around she might not be quite as good. But she would hang
5 onto, of Grandpa was with her, the other Grandpa, her, Casey's Dad was with
6 them of anything, she'd run for him, or he'd take her for a walk so we could visit,
7 you know, and stuff like that. But she was not a, bratty child, never. I never,
8 never, never seen her to be a bratty child.
9 SH: Uh-hum(affirmative)
10 SP: And I don't know. She just got along good. Uh, almost unbelievable what a good
11 disposition that kid had. Now it she's ever upset or something I never seen it.
12 SH: Uh-hum (affirmative)
13 SP: I imagine there is times in her little life when she was upset. But I don't think it
14 was ever because somebody was mistreating her or anything.
15 SH: Okay.
16 KK: Shirley what time do you normally get here? Because I always see that you're
17 usually number one.
18 SP: I beg your pardon?
19 KK: What time do you normally come here each day?
20 SP: Well up until (sound of telephone ringing in the background) lately I used to come
21 right at eight o'clock to make sure he was up and shaved.
22 KK: Uh-hum (affirmative)
23 SP: But I've had so much back trouble and that I started cutting it down. I was here
24 three times a day usually. But my first, uh, a lot, like as you can see, I'm usually
25 the first one.....

10

Plesea, Shirley/Case #08-069208/GG

1 KK: Yeah (affirmative)
2 SP: ...to sign.
3 KK: ..you're the first one, so.
4 SP: I even sometimes had to put the date on the paper.
5 KK: (Laughs)
6 SP: But,uh, to turn it over or something. But just the last couple of weeks I've been
7 starting to cut down on my time because I am just hurting. And now this is not
8 helping any.
9 SH: Uh-hum (affirmative)
10 KK: Exactly. Is...
11 SP: I can't eat or anything.
12 KK: Is there anything you can think of...
13 SP: Yeah (affirmative)
14 KK: ..that we haven't?
15 SP: I can tell you something.
16 KK: Okay.
17 SP: Uh, I don't know what date it was, but when Cindy wasn't hearing from Casey I'd
18 go home from here and you know how the answering machine gots (sic)
19 solicitors on, right? I put this, I played it and it was a jibber-jabber of a little kid
20 with a whole lot of noise in the background. And they let it play and run until the
21 thing stopped.
22 SH: Uh-hum (affirmative)
23 SP: I don't know who's doing that. I don't think Casey would do that with her
24 daughter. Somebody's horsing around is what I figured. Well I don't know how
25 much later but it was, then the, within a few days I got another one. Well I

11

Plesea, Shirley/Case #08-069208/GG

1 answered the phone and it just went on with a little, same identical thing. So it
2 had to be a recording to get it to sound like that. A little child jibber-jabbering,
3 and which Caylee speaks plain if she's going to speak.
4 KK: Uh-hum (affirmative)
5 SP: You know, she is almost three. She's not just two. I mean she'll be three in...
6 SH: Uh-hum (affirmative)
7 SP: ...a little bit. But, uh, that was two times. So I told Cindy the other day, I said, "If
8 Casey says she heard I hope she could identify Casey, or Caylee," because
9 maybe it was some weird thing like they did to me. Somebody playing something
10 on a, I haven't ever had it, you know, since she's reported missing or anything.
11 KK: Uh-hum (affirmative)
12 SP: But it was during the time, two times.
13 SH: Now this gibber-jabber was not Caylee's voice?
14 SP: See, I wasn't, in a way I wasn't expecting it. But if I said it was Caylee's voice I'm
15 not telling the truth because I don't know. But it sounded like a little kid.
16 SH: But it didn't jump out at you of, oh, this is Caylee. Why is she not talking plain
17 English? It didn't jump out at you like that?
18 SP: I'll tell you the first time it was just a shock.
19 SH: Uh-hum (affirmative)
20 SP: And the second time, as soon as they knew a person answered they played just
21 such a little bit and stopped it. They didn't let it go all the way, you know, like
22 that. And nobody answered when I said hello.
23 KK: Uh-hum (affirmative)
24
25

12

Plesea, Shirley/Case #08-069208/GG

1 SP: But they just started playing that. Now other people in the, you know, they might
2 have been doing that to a lot of different people just to bug them or something.
3 But...
4 SH: Uh-hum (affirmative)
5 SP: ...that, I had to say that when you don't have a definite date or something, but
6 that, I had no reason to mark that down.
7 SH: Right.
8 KK: Right. You just figured it was...
9 SH: And I always, uh, after I get about four things on there I erase it. Well, I imagine
10 somebody could always dig up because I never change the tape. But, uh, it , it, I
11 couldn't identify it as her, but I know I had two different ones. And like I say, the
12 first on was recording on my recording machine and it went until they left all this
13 noise and stuff go on until the taped stopped. Until the time ran out or
14 something.
15 KK: Okay.
16 SP: Oh, I don't know. I, I wish there was something I could do to help. I really do. I
17 just...
18 KK: Now everything, you're, you're helping out as best you can right no. Is there
19 anything that your husband might know that, that you don't, or are you always
20 with him any time Cindy was here?
21 SP: He can't even remember his aide's name.
22 KK: Okay.
23 SP: If I ask him, "Who gave you a bath last night?" He doesn't know. I ask him. I
24 says, "Who gave you a bath?" Well I know most of the afternoon certain girls,
25 and if he, or aides, if he would, you , could, and I'll say, "Was it Lizette?"

13

Plesea, Shirley/Case #08-069208/GG

1 "No, she wasn't on." "Was it this one?" "No." And I ask who the nurse was the
2 day. He can't remember their names but he knows their faces and that. So, now
3 he can remember World War II and anything up to before his stroke.
4 KK: Uh-hum (affirmative)
5 SH: uh-hum (affirmative)
6 SP: But he can't....
7 SH: Uh-hum (affirmative)
8 SP: He can't tell you what he had for supper last night.
9 SH: So he wouldn't be able to tell us if he's seen Cayla, he wouldn't be able to say,
10 see, tell us if he's seen Caylee since Father's Day?
11 SP: Oh, I know he hasn't seen her since Father's Day. Now whether he can tell you
12 anything about Father's Day I don't know.
13 SH: Okay.
14 SP: But I really don't feel that we should bother him.
15 KK: Okay.
16 SP: I mean....
17 SH: Okay.
18 SP: ...if I figured that he...
19 KK: Oh, yeah(affirmative), If there's nothing that ....
20 SP: ...can actually have a clue, yes. But like I said ...
21 KK: But there's no time that he would have been alone with her where ....
22 SP: Oh, never.
23 KK: ..you know she may have...
24 SP: No.
25 KK: ...said something or he'd notice anything? You were always present with him?

14

Plesea, Shirley/Case #08-069208/GG

1 SP: You're talking about Casey or Caylee?
2 KK: Caylee.
3 SP: The baby?
4 KK: The baby.
5 SP: Yeah (affirmative), no. She'd never be over there alone, and I'm, and even when
6 he was holding her Cindy was close by because she didn't know whether he
7 could hang onto her or not.
8 KK: Right.
9 SP: Uh, one picture they have with him holding her he was real frail. And that was
10 after January when he had a bad set back here.
11 KK: Uh-hum (affirmative).
12 SP: But he's, he's looking good again now and....
13 SH: Hmm.
14 SP: I don't know whether there should be more recent pictures on some of those
15 phone cameras or something that she has. I don't know...
16 KK: Uh-hum(affirmative).
17 SP: ...whether she got to take a picture that day or not. If her batteries were any
18 good I'm sure she did in the camera even.
19 SH: Okay.
20 SP: So.
21 KK: Okay.
22 SH: Okay. Well I appreciate you talking to us. And you realize today is July 22nd?
23 So this, we're talking about Father's Day, which is a little over a month ago? And
24 you still think that's the last time that you, you were around Caylee?
25

15

Plesea, Shirley/Case #08-069208/GG

1 SP: Yeah (affirmative), that was the 15th and this is the 22nd. So it was five weeks now.
2 But uh....
3 SH: Right.
4 SP: But at least it isn't six weeks.
5 SH: Right, right.
6 KK: And you're a hundred percent positive that that's the last time that you saw her?
7 SP: Yeah (affirmative). That's the last time I saw her...
8 KK: And you never saw...
9 SP: ...and I'm sure.
10 KK: ..your granddaughter, which was Casey?
11 SP: I haven't seen Casey for quite a while before that.
12 SH: Okay.
13 KK: Okay.
14 SH: Okay.
15 KK: Okay.
16 SH: I appreciate you talking to us.
17 SP: Okay.
18 SH: Okay? (Sound of cellular phone ringing in background) Would you like some
19 help getting back to the...
20 SP: No, I don't need help. I've been here(unintelligible).
21 KK: And Shirley, just real quick. Everything that we talked about is the truth?
22 Everything that we talked about today is the truth?
23 SP: To the best of my knowledge.
24 KK: Okay. That's all we needed.
25 SH: Okay.
