CHAIN OF EVENTS 1997

1997-07-28: Boulder official: Ramsey ad 'inappropriate'
Couple seeking help in solving daughter's murder

BOULDER, Colorado (CNN)
July 28, 1997

"Last week, John Ramsey said he was frustrated with the pace of the official investigation and would escalate his own inquiry. In addition to the newspaper ad, the Ramseys had fliers distributed door to door near their Boulder house.

In the neighborhoods near the Ramsey house, residents wonder why the Ramseys waited so long to distribute fliers and take out the ad.

"They could have done a flier like this several months ago, and I think what it does -- even though I have no idea what really happened -- it seems it deflects some of the attention away from the family," said Deborah Scheffey, a neighbor of the Ramseys.

Neighbor Peter Simons, however, said he thought John Ramsey was acting only out of frustration.

"The police investigation is obviously dragging out. And the Ramseys, with their own investigators, are trying to do whatever possible to gather more information," he said."

16 TOM HANEY: Another neighbor, a
17 Debbie Shefley (phonetic), do you know, what can
18 you tell us about her? She lived down at 830
19 15th.
20 PATSY RAMSEY: I don't know if I
21 know her. Which way is that? That down or up?
22 TOM HANEY: Well, it's up but
23 north, just the next block?
24 PATSY RAMSEY: North, so that would
25 be down. North is down.

0117
1 TOM HANEY: Could be.
2 PATSY RAMSEY: I think -- I think I
3 might -- she had kind of light hair and kind of
4 real full.
5 TOM HANEY: Kind of blondish?
6 PATSY RAMSEY: She was another
7 (INAUDIBLE) I think I might have met her but
8 never really -- you know.
9 TOM HANEY: Did you ever have any
10 problem with her?
11 PATSY RAMSEY: (No audible
12 response).
13 TOM HANEY: Did she ever, say, show
14 any particular interest in John?
15 PATSY RAMSEY: I don't know.
16 TOM HANEY: There is a statement
17 attributed to you referring to her that called
18 her "the blond bitch down the street." Do you
19 recall a conversation involving her and those
20 words?
21 PATSY RAMSEY: Who was I supposed
22 to say that to?
23 TOM HANEY: Well, you know, I don't
24 have that part written down, just that there was
25 this --
.

0118
1 PATSY RAMSEY: I think what you're
2 thinking of is -- what's the girl's name,
3 Debbie?
4 TOM HANEY: Debbie Shefley.
5 PATSY RAMSEY: There is a Dana
6 Berger.
7 TOM HANEY: Okay, maybe that's--
8 PATSY RAMSEY: She is blond, very
9 blond. And Priscilla referred to her as the
10 blond bitch. Because she said that Dana would
11 jog over by her house every day. From our area,
12 her area (INAUDIBLE) and Priscilla for a long
13 time when we first moved in had a lot of their
14 boxes and things stuffed in their living room
15 there. And I guess one day Dana made some
16 comment to Priscilla like, you know, aren't you
17 ever going to clean up this place or something
18 to that effect. And Priscilla was like, well,
19 what's it to you, you know, kind of thing.
20 And so she referred to kind of I
21 have heard her call her the blond bitch. But
22 Dana and I never, I mean I enjoyed her. I mean
23 we never really did a whole lot together. The
24 kids were a little bit together. But she was in
25 some profession, I think she was a psychologist

0119
1 or something like that. But she wasn't -- she
2 wasn't a free mom kind of. (INAUDIBLE).
3 That much, but I think the blond
4 bitch thing, I don't think I said that, I am
5 ashamed of me if I did, but I think I heard
6 Priscilla say that.

8 LOU SMIT: Just one other question
9 along those lines. In the report, there is some
10 kind of an indication, this is somebody talking
11 about a blond bitch down the street that may
12 have interest in you.
13 JOHN RAMSEY: Patsy mentioned
14 that last night, that somebody said she called
15 somebody a blond bitch. And that even shocked
16 me. That doesn't ring a bell at all.
17 LOU SMIT: Do you know anybody in
18 the neighborhood that may have had an eye on
19 you?
20 JOHN RAMSEY: No.
21 LOU SMIT: Do you know anybody at
22 all?
23 JOHN RAMSEY: Well, I know some of
24 the people in the neighborhood, but --
25 LOU SMIT: Do you know a Debbie

0483
1 Shefley (phonetic)?
2 JOHN RAMSEY: No.

0485
2 LOU SMIT: Could that be who Patsy
3 was referring to?
4 JOHN RAMSEY: I don't have a clue.
5 That's not the kind of words that Patsy would
6 use. What Patsy thought, and there -- there is
7 a woman that was lived down that way, and I
8 can't think of her name. Who apparently ran,
9 who used to jog and she ran by, knew this story,
10 she ran by Priscilla's house once and they had a
11 bunch of junk piled in their living room, had
12 been there forever and she asked Priscilla, "are
13 you ever going to clean up your house?"
14 And of course that wasn't the right
15 thing to say to Priscilla, and Priscilla used to
16 call her the blond bitch.
17 MIKE KANE: That could be who they
18 are referring to?
19 JOHN RAMSEY: Yes, and Patsy
20 didn't have any axe to grind with her. She was
21 kind of a neighbor friend, a neighborhood
22 friend. I can't think of her name but, she
23 lived on the next block to the north.
24 LOU SMIT: That answers that. Go
25 ahead.
